1. Hydrobike Basics
A Hydrobike is a stable, pedal-powered watercraft.
Pedaling drives a propeller; steering is done via handlebars.
Stay centered on the platform—shifting weight suddenly can affect balance.
Keep both hands on the handlebars when maneuvering.
2. Required Safety Gear
Life jackets (PFDs) must be worn at all times—fully secured.
Whistle or horn is attached to each Hydrobike for signaling.
Safety light/reflective markings must remain unobstructed.
Cell phone in waterproof pouch recommended for emergencies.
3. Operating Area Awareness
The San Pedro Channel is an active working harbor with tugboats, cargo vessels, ferries, pilot boats, and security patrols. Always assume other vessels cannot see you.
Stay Clear Zones
Stay at least 300 yards from container ships, tankers, or naval vessels. Their blind spots are enormous.
Do not enter:
Main shipping lanes
Restricted/federal areas
Berths under active loading/unloading
Avoid the immediate approach lanes of the Vincent Thomas Bridge and Long Beach International Gateway Bridge, where vessel traffic is concentrated.
4. Navigation & Right-of-Way
You are the slowest craft in the water—always yield.
Cross channels perpendicularly, and only when clear.
Use predictable, straight-line movements—no zig-zagging.
Maintain safe distance from docks, buoys, seawalls, fishing lines, and other Hydrobikes.
5. Weather, Wake, and Water Conditions
Even small wakes can feel large on a Hydrobike.
Turn the bow into the wake, not sideways.
Afternoon wind in San Pedro often increases—if pedaling becomes difficult, head back early.
If visibility drops (fog, dusk), immediately return to shore.
6. Communication Signals
One long whistle blast: Attention / alert nearby vessels.
Two short blasts: Request assistance from a fellow rider or guide.
Hand raised overhead: Stop or gather signal.
Wave both arms: Emergency.
7. What To Do If…
…You fall in
Stay calm—your PFD will keep you afloat.
Hold onto the Hydrobike; it is buoyant.
Re-board using the side or rear platform, or wait for assistance.
…The Hydrobike stops moving
Check for:
Seaweed or debris caught in the prop
Unengaged pedal drive
If still unable to move, signal for help.
…A large vessel passes
Slow down, point the Hydrobike into the wake, and keep pedaling steadily.
8. Environmental Considerations
The harbor is home to sea lions, dolphins, birds, and marine life.
Maintain 50+ yards minimum from wildlife.
Do not feed or approach animals.
Avoid disturbing kelp beds and shallow habitats.
9. Emergency Procedures
Call VHF Channel 16 (if equipped) or 911 for life-threatening emergencies.
Notify your rental operator immediately.
Stay together as a group if guided.
10. Final Reminders
No alcohol or drugs before or during operation.
Keep personal items secured.
Return the Hydrobike in the same condition you received it.
When in doubt: slow down, steer clear, and signal early.

# PEDAL KAYAK SAFETY BRIEFING
## San Pedro & Long Beach Harbor – Main Channel Operations
**Please read before launching. By launching, you agree to follow these rules.**
## 1) Harbor Conditions: This is an ACTIVE commercial port
San Pedro and Long Beach Harbors are among the busiest ports in the U.S. Conditions can change quickly:
- Strong current running along the main channel
- Large-ship wakes and prop wash
- Heavy vessel traffic including tugs, ferries, and commercial boats
- Wind and chop that can push you off course
Pedal kayaks are stable and maneuverable, but **you must stay alert at all times**.
---
## 2) Required Gear (Must stay on you or with you)
- **Life jacket (PFD): WORN at all times**
- **Whistle:** accessible on your PFD
- **Phone in waterproof case** (charged)
- **Sun protection & water**
- **Pedal drive installed securely** and seat positioned before launching
---
## 3) Where You May — and May NOT — Pedal
Follow the route explained by staff.
General rules:
- **Do NOT enter or cross the main shipping channel** unless your route specifically allows it and conditions are safe.

# STAND-UP PEDALBOARD SAFETY BRIEFING
## San Pedro & Long Beach Harbors – Main Channel Operations
**Please read before launching. By launching, you agree to follow these rules.**
## 1) Harbor Conditions: This is an ACTIVE commercial port
San Pedro and Long Beach Harbors have:
- Strong tidal currents along the main channel
- Heavy vessel traffic from ships, ferries, and tugs
- Large and unpredictable wakes that can destabilize riders
- Afternoon winds that can overpower pedalboards
Stand-up pedalboards are efficient and fast, but **you are highly exposed**. Staying alert is essential.
---
## 2) Required Gear (Must stay on your body or board)
- **Life jacket (PFD): MUST be worn at all times**
- **Leash:** recommended unless staff instruct otherwise
- **Whistle:** attached to your PFD
- **Phone in waterproof case**
- **Sun protection:** hat, sunscreen, sunglasses
- **Water/hydration**
- **Pedal drive installed correctly** before launch

# KAYAK SAFETY BRIEFING — SAN PEDRO / LONG BEACH HARBOR MAIN CHANNEL
**Please read before launching. By launching, you agree to follow these rules.**
## 1) Harbor Conditions: This is NOT a calm lake
San Pedro & Long Beach Harbors are active commercial ports. Conditions can change quickly:
- Strong current and wakes from large vessels
- Fast-moving boat traffic and limited visibility areas
- Wind and chop that can push you off course
If you are not confident paddling in moving water and boat traffic, ask staff for an alternate route.
## 2) Required Gear (Must stay on / with you)
- **Life jacket (PFD): MUST be worn at all times** (not in the kayak)
- **Whistle:** keep accessible (attached to PFD if possible)
- **Light/reflective gear:** required if visibility is low; recommended anytime
- **Phone in waterproof case:** fully charged
- **Drinking water & sun protection:** hat, sunscreen, sunglasses
## 3) Where You May Paddle (and where you may NOT)
**You must follow the route area explained by staff.**
In general:
- **Do NOT enter or cross the main shipping channel unless explicitly approved and you understand vessel traffic rules.**
- Stay **outside restricted/security areas**, terminals, and any posted “No Entry” zones.
- Avoid tight areas near docks, pilings, and moored vessels (wake rebound and currents).
If you are unsure whether an area is allowed: **do not enter it.**
## 4) Biggest Risk: Large Ships (They can’t stop or turn for you)
Commercial ships and tugs with barges have:
- **Limited ability to maneuver**
- **Large blind spots** (they may not see you)
- **Powerful prop wash and suction** (water movement around them)
**Rules around ships:**
- **Never approach or paddle in front of** a moving ship, tug, or barge.
- **Stay far away** from their path—if you can see a ship moving, assume it is “too close.”
- If a large vessel is approaching: **move out of the channel, point your bow into the wake, and hold position** until it passes.
- Avoid the “pinch zone” near seawalls, docks, or breakwaters where wakes can amplify.
## 5) “Right of Way” Reality
Even if small craft may legally have certain rights in some contexts, **you must always yield to:**
- Commercial ships, tugs, barges, and ferries
- Vessels restricted in their ability to maneuver
**Your job is to stay clear and be predictable.**
